REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Change Organize A Virtual Earth Day EventWhat did you do to organize a virtual Earth Day event? Who helped or participated?
Reilly Loveland 4/22/2020 4:18 PMThis wasnt a traditional Earth Day event - but it was quite the lift and made a big impact on our Green Schools Community and Committee. We launched our first ever newsletter and showcased tips, resources and other things going on in our world that can help us make this earth day the best day in our current virtual world. Check it out!! https://bit.ly/PGSCNewsApril20 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Change Participate In A Virtual Earth Day EventIn what virtual Earth Day event did you participate? What did you like most about it?
Reilly Loveland 4/22/2020 3:19 PMI participated in THREE virtual events today! The coolest thing I learned was the depth of the impact Agriculture has on carbon. -
Reilly Loveland 4/17/2020 1:42 PMI thought I was doing a pretty good job with a mostly plant based diet but I have come to realize I am NOT great at it! Ha! I am really trying to amend 2 meals a day to more than meatless - but to be vegan and it's HARD! This will be an interesting reflection at the end... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Reilly Loveland 4/16/2020 11:34 AMWe did really good yesterday!! We only wasted about 4 oz of food yesterday and it was only because we had to snap the ends off of the asparagus. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Reilly Loveland 4/15/2020 12:27 PMI am making it a practice to get out before I get on my computer every morning. I have scoped out a 3 mile loop through the wetlands near my house. I don't listen to music or have headphones - just spend time being present in my surroundings. I leave my phone at home too to really make sure I disconnect. Here's part of the wetlands! I am lucky that I have a series of interconnected waterways and parks near my home so I have lots of options and routes to take. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate Change Reduce My FootprintWhat is one thing you could do to within the next couple of weeks to reduce your personal carbon footprint?
Reilly Loveland 4/15/2020 10:48 AMThis is an interesting one! It made me realize 3 things.
1. That we weren't signed up for the renewable energy at PGE like I thought we were. Fixed that immediately! 100% renewables woohoo!
2. We just got a new car - which is not great for the environment to get a new vs. used one. But we got our first hybrid which is GREAT because my partner drives a lot for his job. Over time - the impact of the hybrid way overcompensates for Co2 saved vs having to buy a new car. Especially with all the miles that will be put on it.
3. I am getting rid of my very inefficient jeep next month and getting something used and with better gas mileage. That impact alone is huge! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Start or Tend a GardenHow is working in a garden or on a farm good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Reilly Loveland 4/15/2020 10:45 AMIn the midst of a pandemic it's hard to stay focused on your daily life because we have essentially no control over it. Having a garden and watching something grow and have something to check in on and focus on the well-being of every day will have such a positive impact on my daily mood. Also! Really the start of this was weeding out about 5,000 weeds in the backyard. Removing the bad to put in the good :) (Photo of my first tomato starts!)
